The Unfortunate American Diet Recent research and studies show that The Standard American Diet is unbalanced, unhealthy, deficient in vital nutrients and is putting Americans at risk of obesity, various cancers, heart disease and degenerative diseases. A study by Jaclyn Maurer Abbot PhD, RD and Carol Byrd-Bredbenner PhD, RD, FADA of Rutgers University (2007) found that the diet of average Americans is too high in calories, sodium and sugar and too low in fiber, phytonutrients, iron, calcium and vitamins A and E. The report states:- “Dietary fiber intake falls well below the 14g per 1000 calories recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the DV of 25g”. In fact, it was found that the average American only consumed one serving of fruit per day and only 15.1g of fiber in a diet consisting of 2000 calories per day! Fiber can lower cholesterol, prevent cancer and heart disease and is needed to keep the digestive system healthy. The report also found that sugar intake has risen by 13% in the last 20 years and Americans now obtain 16% of their total energy intake from sugar instead of 6%, the intake recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Over 97% of Americans exceed the guidelines for sodium intake, due to the popularity of processed foods, preprepared foods and takeouts. Add to this the fact that Americans eat over the recommended amount of saturated fat and consume too many calories, and you have a very unhealthy diet. Further research by the Child & Family Research Institute (March 2008) shows that the American diet is also deficient in Omega-3 Fatty Acids. These essential fatty acids also available with natural supplements are vital for eye and brain development in the fetus and infants as well as reducing the risk of heart disease in adults. We can conclude that Americans may be well fed, but they certainly aren't well nourished and healthy. The poor American diet will exacerbate the effects of aging and menopause. |
